Energy Stick
Training Wheels Gear
The Energy Stick is a fun and interactive tool used to demonstrate the importance of connection within a group, making it an excellent choice for team-building activities, group discussions, and even science lessons. The experience of the Energy Stick lighting up and making noise when two ends (one held by you and the other by another participant) are touched emphasizes the power of teamwork, collaboration, and engagement.
Ways to Use the Energy Stick:
-
Group Setup:
- Have your group stand or sit in a circle to promote a sense of unity.
-
Discussion on Connection:
- Start with a brief discussion about the value of connection. Ask questions like:
- "Why is it important to connect with others?"
- "What are the benefits of being connected to a group or an individual?"
- Start with a brief discussion about the value of connection. Ask questions like:
-
Demonstration:
- As the facilitator, hold the Energy Stick in your left hand, grasping the metal plate.
- Invite someone (e.g., "Bob") to hold the other end of the Energy Stick with his right hand, ensuring there is no skin-to-skin contact yet.
- Explain that while you and Bob may not know each other well, you're both part of the same organization (symbolized by the Energy Stick). When you connect physically by touching hands, exciting things happen.
- As you make contact with Bob’s hand, the Energy Stick will light up and make noise, creating an audible and visual display of connection.
- The group will respond with surprise and awe ("Ooooh’s and Ahhhh’s").
-
Team Connection:
- After the demonstration, ask the entire group to hold hands with the person next to them in the circle, physically connecting everyone.
- Reconnect the Energy Stick with Bob in the same way. The Energy Stick will again light up and make noise when the full group is connected.
- The demonstration shows how the connection of everyone can create a shared positive outcome.
-
Powerful Metaphor:
- If any individual disconnects from the circle (breaks the hand-holding), the Energy Stick will stop making noise. This emphasizes how disconnecting from the group impacts everyone else.
- Discuss how, in teams or organizations, individual disengagement or lack of effort can affect the collective energy and success of the group.
Debriefing Points:
-
The Impact of Full Engagement:
- When everyone is connected to the mission, vision, or values of the group, surprising and positive outcomes can occur. Conversely, when someone disconnects from these, it affects the whole group. This teaches the importance of staying engaged with the group’s objectives and goals.
-
Maintaining Connection:
- The experience emphasizes that maintaining a connection with the team or organization is crucial. A single person's disconnection can disrupt the flow and affect everyone, reinforcing the need for constant collaboration and alignment.
Educational Extension:
- For teachers, this activity also serves as a fun and educational way to demonstrate the concept of closed circuits in science. By connecting the ends of the Energy Stick, participants can observe how electricity flows through a circuit when it's complete, making the lesson both engaging and interactive.
This tool can be used in a variety of settings—corporate workshops, team-building exercises, classrooms, and even larger group events (with the largest tested group being 225 participants), making it versatile and impactful in teaching the importance of connection in any community.
